Official Twitter apps for your mobile

Having Twitter on your mobile is almost as essential as Facebook for keeping up with what’s going on. The apps listed below are all available from the relevant app marketplace for each platform, and are free. There are a number of other third-party Twitter and social media apps available for mobiles too, including versions for AndroidiPhone and BlackBerry. There are also third-party clients for Windows Mobile and Symbian users, or you can visit Twitter’s mobile interface at mobile.twitter.com.

Twitter for iPhone

Just last month, Twitter acquired one of the most popular iPhone Twitter apps called Tweetie and re-released it for free on the iTunes store. The official app shares many things in common with Tweetie, but has numerous tweaks including a rework of the search function.

Even if you don’t have a Twitter account you can still use the app and search for terms or view trends. Grab the official Twitter app from the iTunes store.

Twitter for BlackBerry

The official BlackBerry Twitter app has recently been updated and now supports keyboard shortcuts, allows you to edit retweets and shows geotagged tweets in BlackBerry Maps. Grab it from the BlackBerry App World.

0.facebook.com launched, cuts on data charges and loads faster

Facebook, together with over 50 mobile operators in 45 countries around the globe, have just launched the new website 0.facebook.com. It brings all the key features of Facebook to people’s mobile phones, loads fast and comes for free. Yeap, zero data charges! But there’s a tiny little catch.

More than 100 million people are using Facebook’s services from their mobile devices but now, a lot of them will be able to continue doing that without having to pay for data charges.

In order to browse the zero-charges 0.facebook.com site for free, you need to be a customer of one of the operators listed below. Be aware that the free deal is valid only as long as you don’t open images and don’t click links to other websites. Doing any of that is still a paid thing.

Luckily, each time when you’re about to leave 0.facebook.com or to open an image, a notification will appear on your phone’s screen reminding you of the additional data charges that might apply if you decide to proceed.

The other advantage of the 0.facebook.com is that it’s optimized for use on mobile devices. So, it loads fast. But it still packs all the major features users would find on the traditional m.facebook.com mobile site as well as on the touch-optimized variety at touch.facebook.com.

Using 0.facebook.com, you can update your status, view the news feed, comment on posts or “like” them, reply to messages or write new ones, leave messages on the walls of your friends. Well, once again, there are no photos to see here. Those are still only a click and ? few cents away (data charges apply for images).

P.S. It seems that entering zero.facebook.com instead of the numeral address does the same job of getting you to the new mobile page.

Fennec, the Firefox for Android, ready to roll out

We expected the Fennec (a.k.a. Firefox for Android) to show up a few months ago but it didn’t. While you’re waiting for the final version of the app to be unveiled you can try out its pre-beta release which is now available for download.

The Fennec was supposed to see daylight for the first time earlier this year, in February. Then, back in March, some kind of a beta version appeared but it wasn’t developed by the Mozilla team.

Well, now you can taste what the real Fennec will be like. What we are speaking of is actually a very early build (as its developers, say it’s even earlier than per-alpha). However, it should give you and idea what you can expect from the final version of the application.

This build has been tested on Motorola Droid and Google Nexus One and as you might guess it’s not bug-free. For example, your phone might freeze and need to be rebooted. Memory usage should be optimized in the future as well.

To get the pre-alpha version of the Fennec, open that link using your phone’s current web browser. Note that you need a phone running Android OS v2.0 or higher and having enough memory left since the Fennec must be installed to the internal memory.

First details and screenshots of BlackBerry OS 6.0 are out

All the BlackBerry fans may want to check this out. The first screenshots and details on BlackBerry OS 6.0 are now available to the public. Better looking interface, extended functions and pinch zooming are just some of the things that come with the next generation of the BlackBerry OS.

BGR managed to obtain some screenshots of the still unannounced BlackBerry OS 6.0. They definitely show a prettier and more user friendly interface, homescreen, browser and music player. Of course, there is some juicy info following the teaser screenshots.

The first change, which you can see from the shots, is the new web browser. It has new graphics, favorites and tab switching. There is no word on the supported number of tabs, but still it’s nice to know there will be at least three of them. The new browser is WebKit-based and will support pinch zooming.

The music player has also been revamped – it now has CoverFlow-like album art and better graphics.

Another new major implementation are the pop-ups. You tap and hold (touchscreen required) on something and you get a pop-up with all available options (up to 9). For example if you do that on a an image or a video you’ll get options for send/use. If you tap and hold on the message menu you may choose to send SMS, Email, etc.

The messaging and gallery apps have also received new looks. Both use nice thumbs and look modern. Pinch zooming is available in the gallery, but it’s claimed RIM has a lot of work to put on it. Still the thumbnail view is much optimized, loading almost immediately.

Finally, the homescreen can be organized in page view, where you can put app shortcuts on every page (up to 6) and scroll with a finger-sweep through them. You didn’t hear us say iPhone-like, did ya?

Unfortunately, we don’t have any release date or even a hint of which devices will be compatible.

The new OS 6.0 is expected to be announced at BlackBerry WES 2010 in Florida at the end of April.
